I’m about to leave public for my first industry job and I feel really good about it, but I also don’t want to walk into a shinier version of the same misery. The pay’s better, the team seems solid, but what if it’s just more fire drills and tight deadlines with a fun Slack channel on top? For those of you who’ve already made the leap, what do you wish you had known before taking your first post-public job?

I wish I would have left big 4 sooner. I work a fraction of the hours as I did in public and I’m way less stressed. You don’t realize just how awful public is until you leave.

I'm under contract for a new build in progress that won't be done until much later this year. I fully expect interest rates will be higher than what I originally estimated. I may or may not try to lock in a good rate early, but I'm planning on renting it out and this throws a bit if a wrench in my margins. I can take it financially, but wondering, If I absolutely needed to get out of buying it, what recourse do I have? Or could I go ahead, and refinance later (who knows rates at that time...)?

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
