Depends how ready I am to leave the current job and/or how much I want the new job
My current gig fell into my lap, with the founder of the firm actively recruiting me while my job at the time was serving me well. So I aimed and shot high in negotiations because it wasn’t a big deal if they walked. We aligned on a number, and I realized I still kinda underestimated my value prop to the firm!
That’s a great point. I’m trying to differentiate between leaving a job for that reason versus taking a new job because that is exciting. Lots to think about!
Always high-ball (at least a little) on your initial salary request, and make them negotiate you down. Don't go overboard, but definitely start on the high end of any range they may have posted.
Thank you! Makes sense
It usually depends on whether I have a job or not. I'm a lot more willing to take risks when I'm currently employed and I just want an increase in pay or a new challenge, versus when I'm unemployed and really need the money.
Very true. Positioning matters a lot
Know your worth and ask for approx 10% more and negotiate from there. Don’t ask so high you price yourself out, however know your worth and stick to it.
thank you! appreciate that
In this market I think high balling can price you out and they make go for other candidates. I always ask for an honest range and if it meets my criteria I will continue
very fair. thank you!
I’ve always played it to conservative. Because like you, I’m afraid of pricing myself out of a job I want. But then I’m left wondering what did I leave on the table.
same here. thank you!
