No. I’ve dealt with one like that in a similar situation. Was a midlevel. Ended up rushing a lateral and went to boutique that wasn’t much better. Message being keep trying to lateral but don’t do what I did and make a knee jerk move. Good luck
I’ve been there. Did good work at my prior midsize firm. One partner tried to silo me off and had a bad attitude most of the time (even though he touted WLB and how hard the profession was). I don’t think this is normal. If it is normal, it shouldn’t be how it goes. I lateraled ASAP to a larger firm’s office in my market. Had some friends who worked there and was confident about the culture. It has been a great fit, and I wouldn’t look back.
Unfortunately, posts like this one come up here more often than any of us would like to see. Screaming and cursing at associates is not normal and not acceptable. You should not have to put up with it. You are professionals working in a professional environment. He should treat you accordingly.
If nothing else, stand up for yourself. Tell this guy, calmly and directly, to stop screaming at you and to treat you professionally.
No, being forced to exclusively work for a yelling, deranged partner is not part of your job. The other partners can shrug it off because they are partners, but there is a power differential between you and this deranged partner.
I would explicitly raise this issue with other partners of influence and ask to work with other partners. If that gets you nowhere and you are experiencing mental and physical health issues, I would consider taking short term disability leave and finding an exit strategy, even one that is a temporary solution (like a city job).
Market & practice area? Yelling isn't overly uncommon but it should not be normal.
Sounds like he’s crying out for help. Suggest therapy.
