I still expect my lead to code and contribute. You won’t let that go

Yah if anything you have more control of the outcome of the work you and your peers do in the role
Possible to move back, but it will more than likely be incredibly difficult. To the point you might have to get out of the company altogether. People management is a very different role with entirely different day-to-day responsibilities. If you like what you do now, staying in that isn’t a bad thing. Does anyone have IC promotions, or do they all lead to people managing? That seems to be the most common, and why most people have to make that choice.
It's generally possible to move back, though your current organization may not want you to, or may not have an opening for you. And at some point you may start to be considered technically out of date. In any event, chances are the promotion won't be boring, you'll be dealing with different things but there could be plenty going on to keep you interested and engaged.
Why not just try it and see where it'll take you? If it's not strictly frowned upon in the company culture, maybe you can still get involved in coding too...
