Remember that you were once dumb
Once? I still am 😂😂
Remember that you’re building up the next generation of our industry. Be kind to them and to yourself because you’ll both make mistakes along the way. Lead with empathy and try to soak up as much knowledge as possible.
Remember you were once a newbie. Treat your newbies well
Build a team, live up to your title.
Be open about what you know, what you don’t know and what you still need guidance on. Don’t feel like you have to know everything and make every decision on your own because you’re a manager now. Becoming a new manager is a tough transition and you’ll still need a lot of support from your leadership.
Great advice.
Stay out of the weeds
In theory, stay out of the weeds. In actuality, I’ve found in industry it’s hard to do that. Too many people are content to act like zombies and SALY from 9-5.
First: Congrats 🎉
Second: refer me to a Senior Position 😜
Be kind to your folks, everyone is dealing with something.
get ready to jump when you see how much you make in y2
What does this mean?
Some of this advice posted here is not logical as you transition to industry which I did. You can’t avoid the weeds. Learn every detail about as much as you can. Let your staff do the work but know as much as possible about how the work is done and what comprises every account. Know how all systems function and how to handle tasks when any staff are not available. Make yourself invaluable. You will never be considered for a layoff when the time comes…and it will. I saw many coworkers at every company I worked for let go at some point. Be nice to your staff but firm. Otherwise they will take advantage of and not respect you. Be prepared to work hard especially initially. Industry is not a walk in the park. A manager still has to actually work. Congratulations and I wish you a long prosperous future!
Thanks VP1 - this is very well rounded. I'm sure everyone is just giving advice out of their own experience.
