Lateral.
What? You expect OP will definitely end up at a firm with all wonderful/compatible partners????
OP, a common occurrence IMO. If you can’t avoid working with the partner, then have a frank conversation with the partner and try to ask how you can be better. They’ll either stop giving you work or appreciate that you are trying that there might be changes on their side too
Is it out if the question if you can’t decipher what they mean in a mark-up that you aggregate questions and set up a call to discuss?
It’s as simple and I can’t read their handwriting. It’s so much more than that. They lack basic communication skills and when you try to express an issue, they pretty much ignore you. It’s like what you just said doesn’t register in their head
Fix it.
If you can’t negotiate not working with them, look for former or current associates or partner who have worked with this person well, or take their assistant as buddy to get to understanding them.
Don’t lateral for that reason alone unless there’s more to this. If you lateral, you are just relocating the problem/challenge - every law firm comes with their own challenges and eccentricities.
I’m trying to move away currently but it’s not happening quick enough for me to stop working with this partner. And unfortunately I’ve hit my limit for how much more of this partner I can take
Is there a practice manager or someone you can ask to expose you to other “practice areas” to diversify your experience? That’s the code word for I need to breathe.
Good luck!
Dump him
You must find other sources of work who will follow up your plate so you won’t have any ability to work with this person. How many other partners are there who could give you work? What are your efforts to get work. There is also a possibility that this is the only honest partner in your group. Often I see hardworking associates who get a pass even though work is not very good—with the exception of one or two partners who will say it like it is. I’m sorry to say it but developing that self-awareness is also an important skill. If you can’t read mark-ups, ask their assistant to translate. Good luck and stay resilient.
I think many of us have been there. Does this partner have a giant ego? Would it be hard to have a conversation with her/him about how you feel?
I have but many times it’s like my question or concerns don’t register in their head and they ignore it. This partner actually has a terrible reputation in the firm and even worse among associates. I’m starting to suspect the reasoning behind their evading my questions is they themselves may not know what to do
Can you work with others in the practice group? People here will reflexively tell you to lateral without any context or concern.
