Deloitte experienced hires, who all received written offers and in process of visa/ onboarding, have you heard back anything about hiring freeze? Or recruiter asked you to delay joining date?
My visa got submitted couple of days back and waiting for decision. When I reached out to recruiter to give her an update and mentioned once there’s decision will discuss on the start date before putting my 2 weeks, she mentioned “Yes, we should talk before you put notice” - Am I overthinking? It may require some sleuthing, but try to find some former associates from the mid-size firm on LinkedIn and ask them for a quick call to discuss their experience. Many will not hesitate to give you the down low since they’ve already departed. The only caveat is to not put too much stock into any one individual’s opinion, as you don’t necessarily have the full picture. However, if 3-4 different people are giving you similar accounts, then that means something.
My midlaw firm had somewhat lower billable hourly requirements than Big Law, but expected us to put in significant effort in top of that for business development. (Not just time dedicated to BD—they demanded results.) One partner told me point blank that it was OK to go home and read my daughter a bedtime story (I was barely making it home ahead of her bedtime) so long as I fired up my computer and put in a couple more hours after that. Same deal on weekends; forget about taking her to the playground. My pay at this “WLB” shop was so mediocre that when I went in-house, I actually got a raise.
I did the reverse, moving from mid-size to AM25. Having worked at two mid-sizes before joining big law, my experience has been I have the same WLB at all but significantly different pay. It’s certainly possible to find a mid-size with better WLB, and it also definitely depends on the AM25 you’re coming from, but I found many mid-sizes oversell the WLB benefits. I’d gladly take 70% of the pay for 70% of the work, but my experience at two mid-size firms was 60% of the pay for 95% of the work. At that point, it made sense to go big.
All of my friends that go from big- to mid- say it's a trap. Far less pay, but clients still have high expectations and billables are not actually relaxed.
I second AGC 1’s advice. Try to speak with alumni of the firm who are parents, in particular. In MidLaw, I’ve observed new parents who want to be fully engaged be pushed out—both mothers and fathers. A smaller law firm may be actually be more prone to this type of discrimination, if too many of the partners are from the Mad Men era of lawyering.
Went from mid-size to big law, I work the same hours now as I did at mid-size and they paid me half. Do not do it.
Exactly what was the case for me.
Having gone from AmLaw 140ish to AmLaw 50, I can say the billable hour requirements aren’t that much different. But you do get your nights and weekends back. But I do more regulatory work and some commercial licensing, so take that for what it’s worth.
I am kinda scared cause of this post and the opinions but I have faith it will be the right decision. I guess it’s not the end of the world if it’s not, at the end of the day

Depends on firm but I am at one where many partners give associates enough work to bill 2200+ despite being far off market
I’m making the switch from a non market paying amlaw 50 to a regional mid size and the pay isn’t much different. my life was chill at my firm but the actual practice is super unsophisticated
Jk I’m just going to stay. Too many posts scared me
Don't do it. You'll work more hours for less pay. Try to find a biglaw firm with WLB. Some exist.
Pay way less but just as stressful as big law
