Explain what happened. Apologize. Ask them to confirm they deleted the email.
Exactly. Call them and follow
Up on deletion with an email. Most professionals will delete it.
Tell everyone else on the thread not to continue using the thread
It happens all the time and usually the unintended recipient just responds “no problem, deleted.”
Chief
Op. It happens. I could tell you terrible stories, but you don’t need that.
Here’s the solution. When you send an email add the recipients one by one, every single time. If you don’t know who someone is either ask or omit them. Then read the recipients again, one by one, slowly, before you hit send. It takes time but the consequence of not doing it this way is feeling like you feel now.
This sounds like a terrible idea lol. This issue is solely caused by typing names in. You cannot make this mistake otherwise.
Consider notifying the client and actions taken to ensure deletion etc. 9/10 they don’t care.
I haven’t done this (yet) but I’ve been the recipient of a wrong email multiple times. I haven’t even thought twice about it. I delete the email immediately and usually send a quick note to the sender to let them know about the mistake. Or, the sender will send me a note after to tell me to disregard which I already have. It’s never been a big deal- mistakes happen.
Depends on what was in the email. I once had a witness trying to avoid subpoena and we had to hire a private investigator to find him
And after investigator
Found him and gave us report on places and times we may bea le
To serve him, my paralegal accidentally sent the report and payment confirmation to the witness
😩
Happened a couple times, and although I agree with taking precautions to avoid it, most people will delete/ignore after you ask.
Just try to avoid it in the future so you don't become the doomsday example where there is some real damage.
I follow up immediately to the wrong recipient (one off) and tell them that they were copied in by mistake and to please delete the email without reading it or any of the attachments.
