I’m expecting an offer to go in-house and I’m going to accept. My current work environment is extremely toxic because of the partner I work with. We are technically on a hybrid schedule but our team works from home. How do you typically give notice in such a situation? Once I’ve accepted and it’s final, do I just call the partner I work with?

Was in the exact same position. Called my partner and let them know, then sent an email immediately to everyone up the chain after the call with my prepped resignation letter (including my last day of work two weeks from that date). Godspeed!

Thank you!

Yep.

Resignation letter/email, make sure to CC your personal email account for later evidence. Send it to the managing partner of the office, not just your primary work partner.

If you would be able to provide work to your firm, figure out which partner or associate you would prefer sending it to. Call/talk with them about the job switch to keep up a relationship. If enough work, you can basically be the Kingmaker for someone’s career (at this firm or another). It can also be a not-so-subtle snub of the toxic partner.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

I’m my partners only associate and I went on parental leave two weeks ago. I feel horrible for leaving him to handle our cases alone, but am trying to focus on my wife and new baby. That being said, should I still offer to handle minor matters that come in to ease the workload off my boss? He’s been super cool during my entire leave, so I don’t feel pressured to one bit.

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)
