Get an Amtrak credit card and buy tickets ahead of time, especially when they have sales. With good planning the cost will be fine, and its the most productive and most on-time way to commute there
Pro
Be warned that getting to and out of Boston airport is a PIA.
If they’re going to the suburbs anyway then it shouldn’t matter much
Amtrak is best - get to Back Bay station then take the train from there out to the suburbs
Flying isn’t the worst, just annoying on the NYC side. If you do fly, get to the airport and take one of the buses to the burbs. If you have time or if the route isn’t great, take the Logan Airport shuttle (“the Back Bay express”) to Back Bay and catch the from train there
Amtrak Acela or Regular, super easy, there’s a stop in the suburbs, and if you book out far enough the tickets are like $100.
That, or a Peter Pan bus.
Principal 1 — the literal reason Acela exists is mostly to connect nyc and Boston. I believe it’s the heaviest traveled portion of Amtrak
Rental cars are better(possibly cheaper with company benefits). ~4 hrs drive and you can drive anytime you prefer.
Flix bus is the cheapest. Leaves across from Penn station and it’s fine better than other buses but takes a while. Amtrak is phenomenal (you can also stop in Providence to save some $ and take the MBTA to Boston ). Flying can be cheaper than Amtrak but honestly getting to LGA or JFK from midtown east can be a nightmare and if you go out of Newark you have to go through Penn station anyway
