Leases can start any day. They just prorate the first month based on the number of days you lived there. Your challenge will be to find a place in July/August. Stock goes really fast and is generally more expensive.

You should start looking as soon as you get here! Things move fast.
I think that’s too close but that’s just me. A huge number of apartments appear between ~2nd of the month through the 15th, for move ins on the 1st or “immediate”. They can start on almost any day usually with negotiation.
July, August, September are the highest rented months so things will go very quickly
You can find and sign a lease in 10 days... as long as your requirements aren't too restrictive.
Set up a bunch of viewings via StreetEasy or whatever other service for as soon as you get here and your should be good to go.
Failing that, leases can start any time (if they are empty) it's just brokers etc don't like dealing with them because it involves calculating an apportionment of rent!
Rising Star
There are leases that start mid-month, but they may not want to show them until the previous tenant moves out. Contact building managements directly for upcoming availability instead of waiting for something to be listed on Streeteasy.
It’s doable, there are still many vacant apartments. Have a conversation with the agent about your timeline and I’m sure they will work with you to get that apartment off the market.
Just make sure you physically see the apartment before making a final decision.
Thanks. Do you mean listing agent or a broker? I wasn’t planning to rely on a broker but will consider if necessary
Thanks everyone!
