Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

At 7th year, most firms will force at least a class year cut for a longer runway to partnership (if there is a NEP track starting around year 8/9). It sucks but it is relatively common.

This is a gift. Take it. Complete no brainer.
I did this in June and would highly recommend it. Took a class cut from 6th to 5th year. Gives you more runway before being pushed out (especially if you don’t have partnership aspirations).
I would also recommend negotiating a year end bonus contingent on hitting prorated hours. They might offer prorated bonus for prorated hours but it is possible to get a full year end bonus for prorated hours if they want you bad enough — taking a class cut is also good leverage to negotiate the bonus.

Why would you go to that firm then?

Then yeah, going makes sense
They’re doing you a solid by offering the class year cut. It shows that they’re investing in you for the long term, not just this year.
Seems like a good move to go to a place where you'll hit hours to make bonus and have extra associate runway by virtue of the class year cut.

The whole class cut is good for you and being done for your benefit theme in these comments is a joke.
