In my history, the amount of people who think that serving is "easy" is mind boggling. The amount of physical work, multitasking, mental organization it takes is huge, not to mention customer service, memorization etc.
Although during the financial crisis of 2008, some of the best candidates ever came through since a lot of good restaurants failed. Not so much now. More people wanting to pad income.
I agree! Serving is NOT easy - people think they can just pick it up but it actually takes training and experience.
Worse initially. Experience matters. Someone who has been in the industry for years will have a much easier time adapting to the job than someone who is completely new to it. But that doesn't mean the office worker can't learn or won't end up being the better option in the long run. I've worked with lifelong servers who were terrible employees and people who never worked a restaurant job before that ended up being allstars. It really just comes down to the individual.
I feel when they are like that they just don't care anymore.
Someone with prior experience is always going to be able to jump in faster, but that doesn't mean office workers won't make amazing employees with a little extra time and training. There are pros and cons for sure. They might keep looking for an office job and leave at the first opportunity. But also, they are fresh to the industry and a lot of people can really thrive on change and proving themselves in a new workplace.
Yeah this is why it’s important to give people a chance. Sometimes a newbie is surprisingly good!
I definitely prefer experienced servers. Serving is not as easy as a lot of people think, and it's also not a money printing machine like a lot of people are told. It's hard work, on your feet, being kind in difficult situations, and a lot of really good servers have to learn over several years.
Definitely not easy work. It’s seriously hard physical labor - and the tips are well deserved!
I’m originally from Iran and have several years of hands-on experience in the restaurant and food service industry. I’m currently looking for a good job opportunity with a fair salary. What would be the best way to find such a position?
Where are you hiring at?? I am an experienced server and have been looking for a job
