I’m interviewing for entry-level data scientist roles and trying to figure out if my expectations are out of touch. I keep reading online that beginners are pulling in $110k or more, but every time I ask for anything more than $100k, the interview process stalls out. It’s happened three times now. Is $95k a more realistic target, or should I hold out for those higher numbers?

I would gauge what you are actually comfortable with getting. I saw online that engineers in my area were easily pulling in $100k starting but I couldn't get anywhere near that. Be careful with what you base your numbers on.

It really depends on your personal circumstances, particularly if you have a family to support. An entry-level job for $100k or slightly below is a great start. I would recommend taking the offer and get some experience under your belt, this is the most important part. In 3-5 years you’ll be commanding a lot more.

Salary surveys for an **entry-level Data Scientist** (typically 0–3 years of experience) show that starting compensation remains incredibly strong, though it varies significantly depending on location, industry, and educational background.
Data compiled from major 2025 and 2026 salary reporting sources (including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Burtch Works, Coursera, and Glassdoor) establishes the baseline expectations:
### Core Salary Benchmarks
Across the United States, the average base salary for a junior or entry-level data scientist sits right around **$95,000 to $117,000**. When you factor in total compensation (which includes sign-on bonuses, performance bonuses, and stock options/RSUs), the numbers scale higher.

| Percentile / Experience | Annual Base Salary Range | Typical Total Compensation |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **25th Percentile** (Smaller markets / Bachelor's) | $66,000 – $85,000 | $70,000 – $90,000 |
| **50th Percentile (Median)** (0–1 Years Exp) | **$94,700 – $117,200** | **$105,000 – $130,000** |
| **75th Percentile** (1–3 Years Exp / Tech Hubs) | $120,000 – $133,000 | $140,000 – $160,000 |

### Key Factors Driving Starting Salaries
#### 1. The Education Premium
While a Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field (like Computer Science, Statistics, or Engineering) is a solid entry point, advanced degrees still hold major leverage in data science. According to recent tracking data:
* **Bachelor's Degree:** Average starting base is roughly **$101,400**.
* **Master's Degree / PhD:** Average starting base jumps to **$109,400 – $115,000** (with Burtch Works placing Level 1 Master's graduates closer to $110,000 straight out of the gate).
#### 2. Top-Paying Industries
Where you apply your skills matters just as much as the skills themselves.
* **High-Tier Tech & Finance:** Silicon Valley giants, hedge funds, and specialized tech firms skew the data heavily, with entry-level total packages sometimes clearing **$150,000+** due to stock grants.
* **Telecommunications & Insurance:** Consistently rank as high-paying sectors, averaging around **$160,000** for mid-to-senior levels, meaning entry-level roles pull toward the higher end of the starting spectrum.
* **Manufacturing & Education:** These sectors typically offer lower entry-level baselines, often ranging from **$75,000 to $95,000**.
#### 3. Geography & Cost of Living
Location remains one of the largest differentiators for base salaries:
* **Tech Hubs (San Francisco, Palo Alto, NYC, Seattle):** Average starting baselines generally land between **$125,000 and $145,000** to offset cost-of-living premiums.
* **Midwest & Southern Markets:** Averages track closer to **$85,000 to $105,000**.
* **Remote Positions:** Fully remote entry-level roles hover around a national average of **$122,700**, though competition for these slots is exceptionally fierce.
> **A Note on "Data Scientist" vs. "Data Analyst":**
> Be mindful of job descriptions. True entry-level *Data Scientist* roles (involving machine learning model deployment, predictive modeling, and statistical scripting) command the $95,000+ averages listed above. Positions titled *Data Analyst* or *Junior Business Analyst* lean heavily toward data cleaning, dashboard creation, and SQL/Excel reporting, carrying a lower average entry range of **$50,000 to $75,000**.

I have many options to consider but two options below are what I’m thinking of right now.

I want to see your thoughts on which one I should pick.

Job B: Senior Project Manager. Contract. $60/hr standard. $90/hr overtime.

Hello, I worked 1 year as a 'Senior Data Engineer' at 110k base. I then was offered and accepted a role as 'Service Manager' at 155k base where I worked another year. Just recently accepted a 'Data Engineer' job at 155k base but with a larger company (in theory with potential to grow).

I am a Google Certified Professional Data Engineer.

Should I be earning more?
