Contact them and be honest. Say something along the lines "I understand that it is still early in your process, but I wanted to let you know that I have received another offer and must make a decision soon. If you are still interested in my application, please let me know as soon as possible and we can discuss how to best move forward"

Accept Company B offer, continue to move through the background checks. If Company A makes an offer - in writing, move through the process. Assuming no road logs; decline Company B
Now, you can never work at Company B as you will be blackballed but it may be worth it.
I’ve done it... you just have to accept the pros and cons

@TIAA1 I guess we will have to agree to disagree overall.
While I agree it's always better to get an offer in writing, by properly responding he leaves the door open respectfully. I've seen companies offer a counter including what was in the other offer.
I think being honest and transparent is the way to go, because I don't ever recommend burning bridges, as that has a way of biting you in the A$$ later.
Company A is likely negotiating an offer with one of the other candidates and you are their backup plan. Don't be offended by that. That's just market economics.
I'm trying to imagine myself in your situation. What I would do is simply accept offer from B. Move forward with that.
If in a couple of weeks A calls and makes you an offer, just tell them that you have another competing offer. Now you know that A was not able to get their first choice and they need you even more. You can demand a better offer from A coming from a stronger position.
People leave jobs all the time. B isn't going to get hurt if you walk away. So one manager there at B may get offended. Who cares
We live in a capitalist market based economy. You should navigate the landscape with clear vision and not get emotional. Any decent professional at B will understand you walking away for a better offer.
Ask Company B when they need an answer. That alerts them to the fact that you have other irons in the fire. I don’t suggest you take the job and then back out - this industry is like a small town and it will come back to bite you. But if the deadline comes and company A has not made the offer, take Company B. Best of luck to you!

If he accepts the role based on a verbal, he should contact company B, and say something along the lines of, "Thank you so much for the offer. I appreciate you taking the time to consider me and for answering so many of my questions about the company and the role. However, after careful consideration, I've decided to accept a position at another company that will allow me to pursue my interest in x and y. It's been a pleasure getting to know you, and I hope we cross paths in the future."

Risky; I’ve seen verbal offers rescinded. Always get it in writing
Yes you should. It’s leverage.
