""Why is this position open?" If the answer is growth, great. If it's "the last person left," ask how long they were there. If the interviewer gets uncomfortable or vague, you could be signing yourself up for a revolving door situation that no one can thrive in.
Can you tell me about the last person who held this role? Why did they leave, or if this is a new role, what gap in the team became so painful that you finally decided you had to hire for it?
If you want to be extra bold, ask: "What is one thing about the culture here that you’ve tried to change but haven't been able to yet?" The Red Flag: If they say "Nothing, it's perfect," they are either lying or oblivious.
I always ask, "what is one hurdle you expect someone in this role to encounter?" I feel like that question alone is very telling about why someone may have left that role before me.
Yeah agree with Marketing Manager, the why is the position is open is very telling how the role is perceived. Lets you know if it's net new, or backfill, which hopefully you can research and see how long that person was in the role

It’s corny but i always ask “what does success look like for a person in this role in 90 days and in a year”. That’s also a red flag to me if they can’t articulate it clearly. It’s almost most important if it’s a new role being created that they can describe that success so you don’t go into a completely ambiguous situation where you could be set up to fail

Those are really difficult. “Lead through influence”. When your decisions don’t have teeth or you’re not enable to actually execute against your vision it’s such an uphill battle in the corporate hellhole
