In terms of proximity to the city, the suburb East Melbourne is beautiful filled with parks and next to the city. Otherwise if you’re happy to venture out about 10-15mins drive then I’d think about Toorak/South Yarra
Fitzroy, it's the best in terms of food, a balance between the urban grunge of Brunswick, the polish of the leafy suburbs of Hawthorn in it's back streets, and the proximity to cycle 10mins into the city
The city is the most pram accessible without a car. All the trains are pram accessible, but most of the trams are not.
I’m currently on mat leave living in the suburbs. My first recommendation would be Albert Park, but that will be closed to the public in March because of the Formula 1 Grand Prix. I, therefore, would elect staying in the southern CBD by Flinders Street station / Federation Square (e.g. Adelphi, Grand Hyatt, Sofitel, or another option in that location). That way I could walk to the Botanical Gardens, Treasury Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens, or walk along the river. You are in the middle of the free tram zone with access to the few pram-accessible trams. You are also right by the trains at Flinders Street Station that can take you and your pram elsewhere in the city. And there are a ton of great restaurants and shopping on your fingertips.
