I’m leaving for a firm retreat tomorrow and got a bad manicure. It’s gel on natural nail in a pale pinky cream, which I thought would be professional, but it just looks streaky.

Is there anything I can do to fix it? I was thinking maybe an iridescent top coat?

Honest question…is anyone else really gonna notice/care?

I also wanted to say that I genuinely apologize if my first response came off as condescending or preachy…I do have the intention of being helpful. I think as women in this profession we put pressure on ourselves to be and look perfect, and sometimes I have needed to be reminded that some of the little things don’t matter. I didn’t intend for it to be a statement as to what you can or should care about, but a reminder that we don’t need to strive for perfection and often times people don’t even notice the things we fret so much about.

It’s going to annoy you but anything you do to try and fix it will make it look worse. No one is going to notice they’re streaky but you.

Seriously just cook with turmeric and it will turn neon pink. Can’t promise it will look better but it might be cooler

I'm sorry you haven't received much substantive feedback here. I'm not a nail expert, but I don't think that you can add a top coat on top of an already-cured gel nail. If it looks really bad--only you can know how much streaky-ness you can tolerate--I'd advise soaking off the gel and doing a fast-fix with glue on nails from CVS or Target. Good luck! I'm sure you'll look great however you proceed

Don't remove the gel unless you've done it before and know what you're doing! 🙅‍♀️ Just leave them. I promise you people aren't paying as much attention to you as you think they are. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Besides, anyone who is noticing your nails will also notice that they're recently done and probably understand that it doesn't always turn out the way you hoped.

Use it as a conversation piece to ask where others had their nails done?

Go to another salon and ask if they can fix it for you. Basically, they'll do a little acetone to take off the streaky outermost layer then they'll reset a gel clear coat over the top. Should take about 5 minutes.
Your original salon should've put your nails under the UV lamp twice for the final coat to really harden it, but the streakiness means they didn't and you left before it was fully set. That would annoy me as well.

I appreciate the science here. Thank you!

I really doubt people will notice. But I understand wanting to feel put together and having a nice manicure helps me feel that way.

A top coat won’t likely get rid of streaking. You can try a thin coat of regular polish over the gel. I’d try a shade similar to what you have, or a touch darker and then a simple regular (not gel) top coat. Thin layers are key. If you don’t like it use non-acetone nail polish remover to take it off.

If you are feeling brave, you can buff the gel first bit and then apply the regular polish but that will make the gel nail rough if you don’t like the result of the regular polish - it does allow the regular polish to adhere better. I wouldn’t do this but it’s an option.

Ha! I was just thinking about whether or not to get my nails done before our conference.

Seriously though, the hotel has a spa. You could see if you could get an appointment there to get them fixed if it really bothers you. But it’s probably not going to be noticeable.

If you’ve removed gel nails before, I think remove them and get press ons or just do a clear coat. But wouldn’t attempt that if you haven’t done it before, can be a lot of trial and error the first time. Have you considered just going to a salon to get them removed? Usually like $10 (in LA) and only takes a few minutes.

Meh I think only you will notice. Everyone else will probably worry about the work.
