I also teach 5th grade and do not like reading logs. I'm thinking of using a "Bingo" like system with different ways to read for kids to fill out each month (read to a sibling, read outside, etc.). I also do a 40 book challenge for the year where I ask students to read from different genres. When they finish a book, they write the title and author on a paper book spine and tape it to the outside of their lockers. This provides a visible reminder of who is reading and who may need to be encouraged .
I used a reading notebook based on Donalyn Miller's 40 books challenge last year. It worked better than any other tools I've used.
I have them doing logs for tracking purposes, but I never grade it. It helps them and me keep track of where they are, especially if they lose their place.
I haven't done them in the past but I love the idea that Jennifer Serravallo has in her book. She uses them to help the kids reflect. "I read 10 pages at the carpet, is this a good fit for me?"
I have taught 5th grade for over 15 years. I used Donalyn Miller’s book The Book Whisper to get me going! It’s a book about getting kids to read and keeping them reading. She has a plan you can use for the book log.
Any way you can do a digital reading log through google classroom?
I like this idea to use as a check in so I have some idea the types of books being read, are they finishing or abandoning books, etc.
I’ve struggled with Reading logs too! Hopefully some really good ideas come through so I can use them too 😉
