I’m looking to somewhat retool into LE litigation as a mid-level. I’m in BigLaw at one of the few firms with an LE litigation practice but no open spots in that group and no substantive discussions on my transfer to the LE team. Im hesitant because of the pay cut (even though debt almost entirely paid off and a nice stack saved for house) but I’m miserable doing deal work and don’t want to get stuck.

Anyone successful done this and stayed Big4 or went back to BigLaw willing to share thoughts?

I did commercial lit for 2 years in big law before going to Littler. I had very minor involvement in some L&E cases which I played up in my resume and interviews. Then I got substantive experience at Littler for 2 years and am now back in big law doing only employment work.

Could you compare your hours/WLB experience between Littler and the big firm L&E?

Why do you want to move into L&E work?

Because I really enjoy it, particularly litigation and want to do it more full time rather than deal work and 409A stuff.

What would your reaction be if the company you applied to asked for you to get permission from your current firm before moving forward? The situation is the company you're applying to is a client of your current firm, and you've already gone through the interview process with the new company. Thoughts?

Preparing to give notice to my current firm. Accepted an amazing opportunity to lateral at a more prestigious firm (better compensation, lower billables, and shorter commute).
I’m excited to make this jump, but it’s still bittersweet for me because the partners at my current firm are truly amazing and I have learned a lot from them over the past few years and will miss them a lot. Any insight on the best way to have this convo without burning bridges? Thanks!

Everyone has a different perspective on this but would love to hear yours. Someone has debt ranging say 4-5% interest rates. Do you attack debt more then investing to move towards a debt free life or do you go after investments since they return historically above that then paying down closer towards retirement. I know the latter looks better on paper but what about the psychological factors of being debt free and the guaranteed return on interest savings.

Looking to change practice area to employment law - tips?

Recently received an offer from Ogletree to do only class action work. It'll be a big change for me, I'll be starting as a fourth year. Double my current salary, etc.

What will this be like? It's more of a niche, but lucrative, part of their practice, right? Will I really get good WLB like they claim? I have a nice 40 hour a week job right now, no billables.

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?

I’ve been practicing in traditional labor for about two years now (although about a decade of labor relations experience) but I’m trying to break into employee benefits law. I have a governmental entity client in Texas that wants to offer 6 weeks of paid parental leave for all employees, even those who aren’t eligible for FMLA. After the paid 6 weeks, the employee can choose to continue paid leave using any accrued personal leave.

Texas does not have a paid parental leave statute.

If paid leave above what is required is offered for parents, do we also have to provide the same benefit to other employees that are eligible for unpaid leave?
