I'm passionate about public service, but torn between a government and nonprofit career. I've heard the impact can be more direct in nonprofits, but the stability and benefits of government are tempting. Anyone who's worked in both, can you share your experiences? Which one offered better career growth and work-life balance? I'm interested in environmental work, if that makes a difference. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

OP I have done both and I am going to be honest, this is a really tough decision to make. I loved working in nonprofit and it was VERY rewarding, but the pay and benefits were not that great. I left to go work for the government and the pay and benefits are great but sometimes I do miss seeing how I was making an impact.

I have worked in both large and small non-profit organizations. The level of professionalism in these environments is often below average. Leaders often lack necessary skills, and many are burned out due to the very long hours.

like

Go for the government job, start an LLC, contract out extra work hours to non-profits. That way you can have your taste for direct impact, government job pay and benefits, and more money. easy peasy.

This all depends what kind of environment you like and the organization. I make way more at a nonprofit and have amazing retirement and benefits but there’s less structure. state government made me not want to get up in the morning, especially during COVID but people swear it’s the golden handcuffs. It depends on the state too. Only you can decide, and you may have to do both to find your preference

like

Do both! I am. Use your gov job platform to create your own non-profit and make an impact in both realms.

And you pay taxes on consulting so it’s all a catch 22

Hi there - early in my career. Just under two years in this role… is anyone in a regulatory role fully or 60% in person? Regulatory from what I’ve experienced is a pretty independent role. Does it get better as you move up in roles or is it pretty solo work. Your insight is welcome :)

Hi everyone. I know you are the WLB in consulting in the world is bad but in general in Europe it is better than other parts of the world. So does the WLB in consulting in Italy slightly better than US or UK?

Here is my idea for a startup! I collect all the data from career transitions and use Data Analytics to predict the most likely career transitions. I could start with consulting. What do you guys think about this? I would be able to predict based on your firm(mbb, big4), your experience, which role you are likely to move (Faang pm, strategy manager, move to mbb). I have all the data to do this, but wanted your thoughts. Would the output of this be relevant to you?
