I’m planning on writing my first resignation letter soon.

To those who have done this before, what did you say / include, and any other tips?

Thanks!

You can google it to find lots of samples. You don’t need to say much, just that you are resigning and give a date. Thank the company and stuff. You do NOT need to say where you are going! In fact, I would not include that in the letter, just say you’re leaving for another opportunity. Good luck on your new endeavor!

Good to have a verbal chat with your manager first. And then send a note if that is needed to initiate separation . Many companies have a more structured process where you do it via system vs writing a letter. And then it goes through whatever paperwork is needed.

Letter doesn’t need a lot of thinking. Be clear about your end date. Add something about great experiences etc if you would like. In this end, only thing matters is your end date

The shorter, the better. One or two sentences is typical. Anything longer can be used against you by HR.

Good advice from the others. Yeah I would give a courtesy call to your coach / project manager first, before triggering any official process (presumably through your HR system).

Talk to your direct manager/counselor first, then any Partners in the chain whom you should give the courtesy. Then let your project lead know. The actual resignation letter doesn’t need to be anything more than “I am giving my notice and my last day will be X.”

Thanks for all the great advice.

When it comes to exit interviews, am I required to provide one?

I hear the points on courtesy to stakeholders prior to the official letter, but I would prefer that communication is limited post the letter.

What is your experience on this front?

I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
