Keep on keepin’ on. Half the time “mediocre creative” just means you didn’t brown nose your way onto the right brief at the right time imo.
You missed the point entirely.
Rising Star
Useless? As opposed to what, being King of All Ad Creatives whose ads change the world and save lives?
I'd say yer Living The Dream.
Stash that imposter syndrome in the cellar and keep being you.
Clients love mediocre work so you good
It’s just a job and all of us are expendable. Enjoy the salary, the vacations and the small luxuries.
Everyone can't be the best and the bar to make "good enough" work is well below mediocre if you work at a decent shop. There's value in consistently being the 6th man and putting up solid points.
Pro
Did you mean well above?
If your work is “mediocre” but other areas of your life are flourishing, then who cares. Just don’t coast too much.
Complacent = replacement
You problems will start once you are 45. Then mediocre 6 figs can be replaced by mediocre for less.
be thankful you are blessed., it's hard out there right now. I have awards like crazy and they mean nothing right now when it comes to hiring people.
It doesn’t seem you are useless at all. I have not got any awards in years, but I can support my family, some tiny luxuries and keep my status within the middle class. That to me is more important than any awards at this point. And to keep things honest, we all gotta admit that the whole industry has become very mediocre.
Get an award
There are very few people in advertising who are NOT mediocre. Some are incredibly talented and committed. But they’re the exception. And, sadly, being one of those exceptional people is still no guarantee of job security (even Greg Hahn got fired). So, there are a few superstars, a bunch of mediocre in the middle, and a bunch of really terrible frauds who hang in there forever. You don’t have to be the among the first; just don’t be one of the third.
Pro
Terrible frauds that hang in there forever. 🥰
Right there with you pal. And I’ve worked with enough heavily awarded creatives to know that you’re at worst, at the same talent level as they are.
Pro
The most awarded creatives are usually shady AF.
I would say you are exactly like 98% of all creatives right now. Hang tough.
And keep looking for the rare opportunity to do something great.
Damn I wish I was making 6 figures and could afford “small luxuries.” In this field, yep you are lucky! Was this a rhetorical question you were asking?
Of course not. But awards might be great if you’d like consistency in the lifestyle.
It sounds like you’re doing just fine.
Mediocre is better than being a brand marketer/client who mostly have zero creative ability. You are Lebron James compared to JV bench warmer in that scenario. There's room for all of us in that game!
