Having done both I feel compelled to chime in here. What do you hate about agency life? The politics? Too much structure? Lack of stability? I think you were going to face politics anywhere. Yes there might be some more stability, but I had what I thought was going to be a into retirement kind of job that got cut short after two years. So that just leaves structure. I think you’ll find with working in house ones like Google or Airbnb or LinkedIn, who are being led by creatives that used to work at agencies, you will have that structure. Otherwise, you have a scenario where people are just kind of winging it and you might know better how to do it yet you are reporting to them. The grass is not always greener, but I just wanted to give you a clear lay of the land for what you might be up against. One other interesting dynamic about in a house is that it still feels like an agency reporting to a client even though you were in the same building with them. You might be sitting right across from somebody who needs to buy your stuff in order for you to succeed yet you can’t retreat toyour own space like you can an agency to figure out how to win that game.
I hear ya! I did the switch from agency to corporate 11 years ago after 10 years of agency. I used my network to get that first job and after that the next two jobs were through LinkedIn. I’m in UX, and the switch worked out for me. The key is to find a brand you like. For instance I worked in house for a hospitality/hotels/resorts company and it was so much fun. Then I switched to consulting firms and that’s a combo of agency and in-house. You work for a company but for various clients in different industries. I’ve had amazing opportunities to do work abroad, better pay, 5-digit bonuses, regular raises, etc. just my personal experience.
I worked with recruiters… Robert Half, Creative Circle, Aquent. In my experience, companies will snap anyone with agency experience up. Prepare to be bored though lol
(Should add that I did two 1 year stints in-house and then went back to an agency)
These recruiters were actually helpful??? I’ve never heard back from anything I’ve applied to through them
They usually go after you. Unfortunately
