I was queen of it. It's a lot of work for sure. By the time I left that company I was doing a newsletter (in it highlighted birthdays and work anniversaries), coordinated an appreciation day each year (you could submit positive notes for your coworkers and at the end, each employee got an envelope with all their notes to read through plus a small token/gift), bi-monthly pot lucks (sometimes it was special like a Mac and cheese contest), seasonal fun activities like a door/cubicle decorating contest for winter holidays, and I could keep going. No one asked me to do most, though once I did it once, the requests to repeat were there. For me, I did it because I worked at a nonprofit where pay was low, work was high and because of the combo, things like that actually made a difference for people. It's in my nature to try and make people happy or cheer them up.
Now if I didn't volunteer myself and this wasn't my thing, that would be a different story.

It's almost an uspoken expectation.
Used to a few companies and decades ago. We don’t do that where I am now. No celebrations. Especially admin day.
