I worked out a deal with my daycare; I paid for four days, but usually brought my kid in only 1, 2 or 3 days a week. Sometimes not at all. It was a pain to pay for something I wasn’t using, but it gave me the certainty that if a job came up, I had support. I preferred having my kid with me when I wasn’t working, but occupied when I did. I would have struck the same deal with in-home care providers if the daycare had said no. Essentially I was paying to keep the providers staffed and at the legal coverage for the number of kids in their care, whether or not my kid was physically there. Again, a pain, but the only way I could accommodate my freelance uncertainty at the time.
We use a half day program. That gives me predictability to stack as much as I can in the AM, and the rest I cover during nap (...or, shamefully, give her a Sesame Street break if needed). There are tight moments sometimes but overall it’s working out really well.
Oh, and it’s super affordable. And gives the kiddo some structure and routine too.

I have a wonderful nanny who works mornings for us and is open to additional work. Sometimes she works full-days to help me when I need her more, but we always have her for at least 4-5 mornings per week. It’s the best of both worlds
