I get it. I often miss being a creative rather than a babysitter.
During COVID we were all somewhat made to make that decision for a bit. Being home made me realize how severe my ex wife’s mental illness really was. We ultimately got a divorce and the kids live with me full time. I wouldn’t go back. It is so easy to get caught up in the moment with work but frankly none of these ads will outlive us. Our children are our true legacy. Being there for them is what matters.
I get it. I am worn out as well. Going through a complete upheaval of “centralization” of an in-house creative group situation. Three separate groups that are separate for a reason are now being combined. It’s been attempted several times before and the headaches are constant. All I wish for is stability to move forward instead of blowing up progress. I totally get it. Do it!! Best of luck!!
I don't think it's a mistake. But it really has to do with what you are as a person, meaning did you get into the business because you wanted to create things? If you're someone who likes to make things and bring them into existence, being into a more managerial (or babysitting) role can be stifling. You might feel a lot better about things if you get back into making.
OP at the end of the day only you know what is best for you, and you have to do just that. I don't think you are making a mistake if it means less stress for you and more overall happiness in your career.
it’s a shame that this is a tough decision. i miss the days when you could just be a good creative and get paid for that skill. now the only way to make money is to take on a leadership role that takes you away from the creative.
do what’s best for you. good luck!
Serious question. How do you “get taken away from the creative”? Every senior level creative I know is banging away at scripts and ideas constantly. They just have a few more meetings to manage.
Good question.
Roughly, my week looks like 25% of the time reviewing the work of the teams in my department, 25% taking new business calls and pitching, 25% team management, 25% ... IDK misc leadership bullshit like resourcing and issue resolution?
We’re a small shop so there are a ton of random things that seem to fall to me like marketing as well. It’s just too much without any time to really focus.
It might be a pipe dream to think it will be different elsewhere, but having to carry so many different priorities, any of which could catch fire at a given moment, it’s not it for me anymore.
