I'm trying to pivot into a tech job and finding it difficult to get my foot in the door. I've earned certifications, continue to learn, and apply consistently, but breaking into an entry-level tech role has been a challenge.

For those who successfully entered the tech field, what helped you land your first opportunity?

Define what you mean by a "tech job" - what roles are you looking for, and what background or education do you have?

PS this is the worst job market for tech in over a decade (or decades?) - you're competing against tens of thousands of displaced tech workers with a massive amount of experience.

What helped me enter the field?
Contacts. Really. That was it. On my first real job, I was said that they gave me the intern opportunity just on a whim, but that they ended up really liking my work. So contacts and luck, but once you get the opportunity give it your all.

On the current job market:
As others said, don't put yourself down. You are on the worst the tech job market ever was. Before a senior engineer would be able to jump between companies easily. Nowadays, there are some who are searching for over a year. It is tough and searching for jobs is soul crushing.

Hi Fishes, Pls help,

Have cleared HCL interview. Initially they offered 23 lpa (via proposed offer letter, to be approved by L4), but i requested to reconsider it for 25 lpa. After 5 days, they sent final offer letter of 19 lpa (stating they can offer max 50% as per L4 approval).

I don't have any other offer as of now. What should I do?

Hi all! I was asked coordinate a local happy hour for my team. The issue I’m having is that I’m currently pregnant and am not sure if I’m comfortable to hang out with strangers. What’s the most professional way to say no without hurting feelings / burning bridges? Or should I suck it up and go?

Had an epiphany recently.

Why do I work so much?

It’s because I have little family and few, if any, friends. Had a rough childhood. My way of making an impression on others has always been through work.

By working, I do something I’m good at and makes people appreciate me, while covering for my loneliness and feeling of inferiority. It’s sort of the only thing holding me afloat.

When I’m probably never going to have friends or a family of my own, becoming partner is the next best thing.

My partner of 5 years ended our relationship last night. I’m shattered and feel absolutely sick, and I know the healing isn’t going to be easy. We were on the verge of an engagement and I was ready to spend the rest of my life with him.

I don’t know how to approach work during this time. I think I can get by, but I’m definitely not 100%. Should I talk to my boss about it? My team is close-knit and comfortable around each other, but I don’t know if it’s “appropriate.” What would you do?

Is front end web dev a lucrative career choice? Currently in the commercial banking industry but don’t enjoy it a ton, enjoy learning basic front end web dev because I like the control and creative aspect of it, was curious if I should just keep it as a hobby and keep a stable banking job or possibly look into trying to prepare to make a switch in a few years. Thoughts?
