SM runs more complex and larger jobs. They usually have managers under them to run the day to day and supervise the team, and they act more as the client lead or partner depending on the client. At our firm to be a SM you have to run an initiative outside of serving clients, be technically proficient in your field of expertise and be able to run the job without much partner involvement.
