Yes, when a state police officer shows up on the scene of a crime, they are typically in charge of the situation. During my internship at the state police barracks last fall, I learned firsthand that troopers often take charge of a pursuit if they join it, even if a deputy was the one to initially initiate it. It was quite interesting to observe the dynamics of how each agency interacts in such instances.
As far as I understand it, state police officers always take over once they arrive. But I've never worked in a state like this. Good luck on your internship!
Too much tv watching. Referring to pursuits... other agencies may join in, but there ia still the fact of what initiated it. If a robbery occured in a town and the suspect fled, no other jurisdiction is taking over the robbery. Cops aren't typically out there trying to take work away from another. State police arent superior to deputies, and they arent superior to municipal cops. Its all jurisdiction. There are exceptions.
