Always ask about it in the form of TC. Otherwise you’re stuck guessing where the wiggle room is, and on the 2nd strike you might be out…
I just went through this for an in house litigation position too. Just ask if the offer is negotiable (they’ll say yes). You should treat that counteroffer as your best and final and let them meet you in the middle somewhere. I was able to squeeze out only an extra 5k on base, but I was already in the top of the band. 285 base, 214k RSU and 20% bonus. VHCOL. Shoot me a DM if you have any questions.
Yes
I just did with my first in house offer - went up by around 15k. But I suspected there was room for negotiation in light of the public salary bands and how the recruiter has been talking about comp
Yes, should always be room for one negotiation. If you ask for about 10-20% more base, that’s usually expected. Once they counteroffer or say they can’t move from their initial offer, I wouldn’t negotiate any further
Update: Thanks everyone! Got an extra 15k. Only made one counter offer and then accepted (would’ve accepted if they said no too!) Not sure this matters but sharing: I also made sure to get back to them very quickly—it was basically 24 hours between verbal offer and acceptance—not sure that mattered but I like to think that showed I was excited and ready to accept
Congrats!
Are the $90k rsus per year or over 4 years?
I agree with A2. Ask if the offer is negotiable. You can probably squeeze another 10% out. It’s hard getting in-house as a litigator, and even harder in this economy and remote. I’d go for it even if you can’t get more.
