Punishing employees for discussing wages is illegal in the US. I’ve generally found wage discussions among co-workers to be far less beneficial than discussion with others in the broader market.
I get a much better picture of where I should be salary-wise and can compare benefits with it. I’ve seen some high salaries, but with barely any PTO. So if my offer is lower-end and has bad benefits, I know I just need to negotiate harder.
