Agility. True team collaboration and diplomacy. Managing external and internal resources. You’re not that important - seriously - going in house isn’t an agency with inflated titles.
In house guy here. Use “we” and “us” and “our” when talking about the company from the first interview.
Comms role within the company: Build the Brand, Create the Culture, Support the Sale. You are the connecting glue using tools of good communication to create belief that drives desired behavior. Use this to talk about what “our” top priorities are.
Crisis management, people management, understanding that you work with and for a matrix leadership e.g operations, finance, legal, HR. Everyone is your boss.
Tbh, I hate ex agency people in house. They just don’t get it.
Actually, success is what the execs decide. Just keeping the company out of media doesn't work.
Client and stakeholder management. Show that you know how to follow the money and prioritize what needs to get done to sell more business.
In-house marketing people do understand marketing jargon, but I’d still avoid it. Nobody wants to be wowed with bullshit. Plain English.
Being at an agency means you can multi-task and deal with competing priorities and challenging, demanding clients. It means you can ramp up quickly. Play that up. Agency people are fast and flexible. Law firms are like agencies in that you have many different practices that need to be marketed in a variety of ways, as well as many equal stakeholders. Most firms will appreciate what you bring, but you may need to point out the similarities. Jumping firm to firm can be harder because there are cultural differences. Agencies require malleability.
