PTO needs to stop being treated as a “favor” the company allows you when it’s really a benefit that was guaranteed when you accepted the job. Anyone who looks down on someone for using their PTO is probably not the kind of person you want to work for long term. Just give reasonable notice and enjoy your 2 weeks!
Would actually advise against structuring it around major holidays if you're relatively junior and, especially if you're childless. Lots of senior people want to take time off then so more junior folks are needed to do the day to day work. Go when it's slow and no one will care. I've taken 2 2-week vacations both when my workflow/group was slow and was totally fine.
I've seen 1st years take 3-4 weeks off especially during December and THAT was definitely discussed in a negative tone...
A1, you should probably re-read what OP is actually concerned about.
If you plan your work around other people's children, that's fine. Just please don't expect anyone else to do this, ever.
I have taken 3 weeks at a time on a regular basis pretty much every year including my first year as an associate and no one cared. You just have to make sure you give enough of a notice. Longer the vacation longer the notice. If your leadership is good and your work speaks for you no one cares
Take it. Check in with your team to make sure there's coverage and that deadlines won't be missed/extended because of your absence. But honestly, take it. Life is too short.

I take 2 weeks every year, sometimes edging up to 3 if it includes Xmas. I would personally go insane if I didn’t and I think it helps encourage the whole team to take their vacations (I moved from Europe 6 years ago as a junior so have decent training in how to take holidays)

Begging you to take the holiday you earned. I get it, I just think it’s terrible advice.
If it’s structured around a major holiday (eg July 4th, New Years in the US) no one has batted an eye in my experience
I wanna take 2 weeks too so following😬
Take it and don’t even question it.
I took 3 weeks back to back - best decision ever. I had it planned 5 months in advance but had no idea I’d be joining a new team 2 weeks before my trip so was a bit awk but in hindsight it was fine. I was just super transparent about the whole thing when I joined.
I have as have others in my group — go for it.
