External recruiters want to tack on their fee so if the gig pays 75 an hour, they want you to work for 45 so they can collect 30. Don't work through external recruiters if you can avoid it.
First of all, that’s unprofessional as hell by the recruiter. Second of all, that is a little high in my opinion, but I’m all about people getting paid. For context, I made $60 an hour at my first freelance job with the same level of experience in NY. That was 10 years ago and in a different city, but thought I’d share. Anyway, get it if you can, but don’t be afraid to be flexible.
third party recruiters take half your pay.. don’t listen to them. avoid them if you can.
i ONLY work with them if I need some money or don’t have anything else to do with my time.
This is a little bit of nonsense. Not all 3rd party recruiters “take half your pay” place like Creative Circle and other staffing agencies will, but headhunters and independent recruiters do not do this.
It depends on their client, but it is high for your level of experience.
i agree. but who knows.. this person might be talented! work will speak for itself. if the rate is too high for the quality of work, clients will disappear.
I have a friend who started off in freelance design with a $60/hour rate in SF. Worked directly with clients without a recruiter. Now she charges higher into the $70/80s after a year. She had 3 years exp prior.
I’m at $110 and hour or $1,100 day rate in SF. Five years agency experience, two years in-house.
I’m an ACD in NYC with about 25 years experience and charge $85/hr. Yes, your rate is too high for your level of experience.
