Is a 1 hour commute doable for a hybrid role where you go in twice a week?

Yes easily - but big difference between 1 hr in stop and go traffic in one hour on an easy train ride.

like

It’s actually very light on traffic but a farther haul.

like

I would take that over my current situation, which is driving 45 minutes each way five days a week

like

im doing it for three times a week for slightly longer commute, its fine if u work 40 hours and have a tesla that can run fsd

like

Or if you can charge at work and your start time is flexible. I can charge at work for free, have a less than 20min commute, in office everyday, and have a strict start time. I would definitely move for a hybrid role that only requires me to be in 2 days a week with a 1hr commute if the start time for in office days is flexible.

Are you up north? I had an offer with a similar commute - nearly all highway time - but 4-5x in office per week. Turned it down partially because the snowy/icy dark drive in winter felt dangerous

like

yeah most coastal states like cali have alot of traffic but at least the weather is nice

Were you not working in Feb 2020?

like

I’m not sure if you are agreeing with me, or completely missed my point. Cuz an hour is nothing

Yes.

What about 1.5-2 hour commute 2 days a week? Combo of train and subway.

Round trip 4 hours you'd do?

I have an in person every day with 1hr drive. You’ll be fine.

Sucks. I go in once or twice a month and only 25 min commute and even that seems like too much these days

likefunny

Absolutely.

This is the average city-attorney commute (45 min to 1 hour via public transit). Are you driving?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

My company cut staff to 4 days/wk to save funds. I was getting requests from coworkers for docs needed urgently on our day off (fridays). I would oblige them. But then, I learned that those same coworkers had been put back to 5 days because they were deemed “essential“. I felt foolish and decided to stop working on fridays. One EVP (not the GC) in particular has been aggressively texting/calling me on fridays. How Do I tactfully respond? My out-of-office email is not enough of a hint...

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?

Maybe a dumb question for a lawyer, but is it normal to not be allowed to review an invention assignment agreement and post-employment restrictive covenant agreement at the offer letter stage? I’m told they can’t share prior to onboarding (I’ll be asked to sign them then) but I know I’m not going to sign some crazy non-compete so would like to see the drafts before accepting the offer.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw.
