Is a low base with a massive, unrealistic variable component always a trap to get cheap labor? I’m being offered a $60k base with an expected $180k OTE, and it feels like a lowball disguised as an exciting opportunity. The hiring manager keeps telling me that the top rep made $250k last year, but when I asked for the median team attainment, she admitted only two out of twelve reps actually hit their targets. A 1:3 ratio between base and variable pay seems incredibly predatory.

I'm not in sales per se but I manage my company's largest wholesale account ($150 million per/yr account). It's a great company, awesome culture, good benefits, flexibility, but the pay is not great ($60K/yr). All the pros outweighed the mediocre pay, but now with inflation rising, my paycheck isn't going as far and I'm having a really hard time trying to figure out if I should start looking elsewhere or if I should ask my boss for a raise.

Tips for 6-month eval? Originally hired at 35K as assistant and was told if I performed well, I could expect to make 50K after a year. After one week, the operations manager resigned and I took over as a trial. Officially am operations manager, but no title (only verbal) and no raise. Owner likes benefits over big pay raises.
