I am not currently a manager, but can speak from prior management experience, and current hiring panel experience for what it’s worth.
Some managers are stuck in an old school mindset, or a mindset that contracting is not stable work, but many understand that contracting is a valid career and it can depend on how you position yourself and your experience that matters. Position it as intentional and strategic - able to gain diverse experience, work on multiple high impact projects, and develop your skills quickly while continually adapting to your ever changing environment. Most industries are rapidly evolving and require adaptability. Focus on your results/impact and not duration of each contract. You can show your commitment to wanting to move full-time and express your desire to want long term impact (ie after xx years of delivering measurable impact, I am seeking a full-time opportunity to contribute long-term to an organizations success. If you’re concerned about duration of contracts being an issue you can relabel your titles (using your title here, ex. Manager | Consultant (2018-2025) - contracted with [Company A], [Company B], etc. - resume impact points.
Sorry for the long post, but hope this helps a bit.
This does help! Thanks for the well, thought out response. Do you have an example of such a resume format? Recruiters have told me using years only is a red flag so I still list each contract job with months to show there aren’t huge gaps
Contracted for roughly a decade and it did work against me in some cases because the perception was “wow you sure have worked at a lot of places.” It’s hit or miss when trying to land a full time role just based on if you’re being considered by a competent decision maker or an old school traditional dinosaur.
