Started my career client side - you tend to solve the same 4-6 problems over and over again. For better (less stress, better process) and for worse (repetitive).
larger orgs will have more analytics groups which gives more horizontal opportunities.
it can be tougher to move vertically, especially without an advanced degree (either an MBA or a masters in a technical area).
Thank you Dir1. Why the switch to agency side (I am assuming you’re currently agency side). My fear of going to client side, even though the pace may be slower and probably better compensation, your knowledge or learning is limited when compared to agency/vendor side of the industry (just my current perspective but do enlighten me if you see differently).
I started my career client side - my growth was stunted. After 4 years, it was hard to learn more and grow vertically. So I agree on the knowledge and learning side. now as a VP - I’m hoping to go back client side, just not a lot of VP level client side jobs in analytics.
I disagree on the comp side - I find them to be comparable.
I was at a top 25 ecom website. (not Amazon, but a place you’ve definitely heard of) that was (and still is) doing some great analytics work. from talking to former coworkers, they’ve changed their approach in the past 2-3 years and are doing more big data/machine learning/etc. they have rich customer data.
Can you describe your experience with growth? I feel analytics in this industry is starting to expand and if I leave agency side to client side, I may be stunted down the line. I rather earn average pay but remain valuable for the duration of my career than be well paid in a slow, behind the curve fortune 50 company.
Just conflicted because opportunities don’t come by like this.
Do you mind telling which company or vertical your client side experience belongs to?
