Is Houston a good city for a couple in their early 30s? My wife has a great offer but we've both lived in Chicago forever

Houston is a great city. Like any big metro, the experience you have will depend on where you live. Lots of great options. But mass transit is a joke, so pickung where you live with commute in mind is important. Anything you can do in Chicago, you can do in Houston....only the sports teams change, and the winters are milder.

Would hansdown pick Houston over Chicago. Lower cost of living among other favorable metrics.

Chicago is a much nicer city. But I guess if you have kids or plan to soon Houston isn’t bad.

Second A1, Houston is a super international city with an awesome food scene. Each neighborhood inside the loop has its own vibe.
The Heights or Montrose are great neighborhoods to consider for professionals in their 30s.

Yes!!! But make sure you live in the loop :)

Weather, traffic, and public transportation are terrible but people, diversity, food, affordability, and job opportunities are great.

If you’re DINKs, living inside the loop is a lot of fun. But I wouldn’t recommend it if you have kids unless you’re ultra wealthy and can afford to buy in West U.

Memorial, Bellaire, and certain parts of Spring Branch and the Energy Corridor are good options if you want a bigger lot relatively close to the city, to still be in a somewhat happening area with young families, and to have good schools.

Suburbs are suburbs just like anywhere else and the commute will be awful from any of them

HOUSTON HAS NO STATE INCOME TAX!!! Your paychecks are higher 🥳
cost of living is lower 📉
it’s in the 60s this week! 🌡️
It’s more diverse🏳️🏴🏴‍☠️🏁🚩
There’s always more to do! Nice restaurants, hobbies, excursions, etc.
The vibe is just better to me…people are friendlier - I noticed it as soon as I got off of the plane. Southern hospitality is a real thing - people are more willing to help you with EVERYTHING, starting with even just your luggage & your car.
PS I came from Chicago too, lived in both places for years now!

You’ll like not having the extreme cold/snow …. Houston is a great city (from a Houstonian since 1978 and had friends living in Chicago)….

Lived in Chicago for 6 years, and moved to Houston directly from there 7 years ago. Had option to return to Chicago but chose to stay here. Food is amazing, cost of living is better, and winters are short and mild. Agree with living inside the loop!

Yeah summer is rough, but I just count those 4 months as my “indoor months” (vs like 8 indoor months in Chicago with its never ending winter). Plus summer is a great time to visit Chicago :)

like

bruh I'm from the north I thought the same thing. If it's too hot, go enjoy the north coast during the only time of year it has good weather.

I’ve been in Houston for the last several years after leaving the northeast and I enjoy it. It gets extremely hot from June - September but if you can get through that it’s fine.

If you live inside the city, Houston is a great city. Look “inside the loop” (610). Living in the suburbs sucks for commute and options of things to do. Houston is known for its amazing food scene & theater/arts scene. Great museums although Chicago has better. There’s a ton to do on the weekends, and Rodeo season is awesome. It’s a high of 52 degrees today and that’s the coldest it’s been all winter.

Pros:
Our food is great!! And very diverse options.
There's a lot of fun stuff to do.
We have plenty of HEBs, one of the best grocery stores ever.
Lots of diversity
Low cost of living
People are generally friendly and helpful
Cons:
Traffic is terrible, and public transportation is almost non-existent. So like others said, try to live close to where you're working (or WFH like me)...the city is huge, and the metro area is even more huge.
The summers are the literal worst (and I'm a native Texan/Houstonian), so don't be surprised if you melt your face off!
There's also no zoning laws, which I only recently discovered is mainly a Texas/Houston thing because "we don't like regulation." 🤦‍♀️ So some areas look unnecessarily trashy.
If you're animal lovers, be prepared to rescue strays all the time because a LOT of people don't care about their pets. It doesn't seem to matter how nice the area is, it's all over. Animal welfare laws in Texas are the bare minimum. It's heart-breaking.
Although lots of diversity, also a lot of "old-fashioned" bigots.
Not even going to mention crime...because it's a major city. It's like other major cities in that aspect.

I've never been to Chicago, so I can't compare the two. 🤷‍♀️

If you are not commuting to downtown, The Woodlands is an awesome place to live. Cyntjia Wood Pavillion has a ton of great concerts, great restaurants, great shopping.

Yes, true

The Galleria area and the Heights are great within the city. I lived in the Galleria and absolutely loved it! Personally far better to live than Chicago imo, but without the public transportation. Summers are unbearably hot, similar to Chicago winters being unbearably cold with icy rain shooting sideways.

Houston is also a hidden gem for food! Found some of the most authentic food in almost all genre there!

Any women here with lean PCOS? I do not ovulate on my own (metformin regulated my periods but I still don’t ovulate) and am moving from three cycles of Clomid/IUI to IVF soon. No other issues have been found other than my PCOS (HSG shows tubes open). Curious about your experiences. And the reason I mentioned lean PCOS is because it seems for others with PCOS part of the fertility path is diet/exercise/weight loss but I am already very tiny.

Or the promotion for the mid year already done?

Can someone please tell the details and when we can expect the new revised letter mentioning the new designation.

1. Would you recommend living in Pearland?
2. What are other good areas to live in? Safe and would like to be less than 1 hour from Galveston.
