Yes it is a red flag. The issue could be with the hiring team, bureaucracy, or if they are looking for a unicorn. If a role is open for thag long is it even essential?
That’s a good point. Even if you are hired for the role, being in a non-essential position isn’t a great place to be. You’ll be first on the list for layoffs and cutbacks.
It's hard to say, of course, without any visibility into the company. Whatever is happening, it seems like there's some kind of problem. Whether it's disorganization or indecision or a problem with the budget, something seems off. In this economy it seems like some companies list jobs and then they get hesitant about hiring anyone, so it might be that.
Depends on the position, but generally it’s not a good sign. High turnover is one of the reasons they’ll at least be actively hiring, just not sure if it’s something you want to be involved in.
It could be a red flag in some cases but in my experience it’s usually not. There are a number of reasons why a position hasn’t been filled yet, so it’s best not to assume the worst. You can ask during the interview why it’s been open so long and see how they answer and react and then make your judgement from there.
The position I have now was open for almost a year but I like where I work and it’s not a toxic environment at all. It was open because although they were interviewing a lot of candidates, they just couldn’t find the right fit. Companies are not just gonna hire someone they feel is not a good fit just for the sake of filling the position because if they do that, it creates more problems in the long run when they new employee doesn’t work out.

That is tricky but I’d say so! I wouldn’t trust the hiring staff or the company if it took that long, however you might find the company hasn’t just taken the job down (I’ve had that a few times!)
