It would be a bigger red flag for me if they only brought people they know. Maybe they’re trying to bring a new group of people together.
Do you mean over-hire as in too many people for the amount of work? That’s thoughtless if the budget/work isn’t there to support the hires.
But I think it’s a good thing that they are bringing in people they haven’t worked with, assuming that’s purely based on the quality of the work.
Just because you’ve worked with someone before doesn’t mean you’d automatically bring them to a new place.
There’s lots of reasons to not bring in people from your old agency. Maybe they didn’t hire the folks they were managing before, and now they have a chance to build their own team. Maybe they came from a different market. Maybe it’s a smaller market and immediately poaching from your old shop could burn a bridge. I can’t recall ever seeing a new CD bring in “their people” immediately. CCOs, yes. ECDs, maybe. Even then, they often have non-competes at that level when they leave their old shop, so it takes a year or so before they can poach. But not at a CD level. Unless you’re at a small agency and this CD is the most senior-level creative? Also, you never know what they may have been tasked to do by their new agency’s leadership.
You said they were in a different industry. Why the heck would they bring in staff that have no experience in this new industry?
