This is quite often accurate. Those in the Big 4 working on middle market and entrepreneurial clients see it the same way. Unfortunately, the Big 4 keep moving up market and there are fewer and fewer of these clients in the portfolio. Been this way since the 90s and ebbs and flows a little depending on firm, geographic market, industry niche and economy.
Also, since the late 90s, the middle market firms have moved exponentially up market and many clients have complex issues. Professionals in middle market firms have opportunity for highly complex work with significant responsibility.
Profession has changed a lot from 70s/80s til now.

Comes down to deal team size. MM runs much leaner. Most deals are run by just one Director and one SA. By definition the SA will be exposed to more aspects of the deal, including QoE, NWC, DDL adjustments that Big 4 SA have less visibility into. That also comes with more responsibility but in return you will learn exponentially more than your Big 4 peers.

There’s a shortage of Managers unfortunately in our region unfortunately.
This is typical at junior levels and I agree from my own experience.
Second everything said above given my experience both at a Big4 and now at a MM firm. Significantly improved in personal and technical skills making me feel like I actually do qualify for the position. I've experienced and know plenty of SMs and above at Big 4 who were, and maybe still are, incapable of tasks asked at his/her level. Those folks break the team and more than often drive A talents out of the team.
Don’t big4 also chase after middle markets now lol? At least I feel like KPMG is mostly working on middle markets deals.
Yes, due to major slowdown in 2022 big 4 really came down market to stay busy
