Recruiters can't place entry level attorneys
For 2nd-3rd year this isn't relevant
You can try but you’ll be fighting upstream. They like to place juniors (2-3 years) and above.
R2, which ones?! I may need to broaden my own job search.
I think you'll find recruiters who may be able to help but most times they will take your information and not come back to you. Most organizations want the experience and hence why they are having a recruiter go out into the market place for them.

The legal market opens up for laterals at the 2 year mark. A legal recruiter can help then, but the sweet spot tends to be 3+ years.
Also, although not mentioned here, be mindful of prior moves as well. It's difficult to make a move via a recruiter if you have 2 or more moves within 5 years.
From the hiring perspective it can be hard to decipher between those two realities when confronted by such a candidate. Saying they were trying to ascend the ladder could be cover for someone who always has their foot out the door or doesn’t know what they want. So comes down to the individual firm what their risk tolerance is for such candidates and how often an recently they have been stung
When voting on lateral candidates (partner), we always discuss if there is a recruiter involved. Associates are hard to find without one but when I am hiring, I’d prefer to not have a recruiter involved. AmLaw100 here if it helps.
Can anyone give advice on someone who wants a job as a paralegal and his only experience was as a jailhouse lawyer.
It very well can be. I have used recruiters in the past to help find me roles when other means weren't working. The job market is rough out there and they may know of opportunities that you wouldn't find otherwise.

If you have less than 3 years of experience cast a wide net in your job search, certainly use a recruiter that’s knowledgeable in your area and will work hard for you but also network by reaching out to fellow law school alumni and applying yourself to no recruiter submission roles. Feel free to reach out via DM if you need to be pointed in the direction of some legal specific resources or jobs that might be a fit.
