Dude you are going to suffer so much. The role is so different. I did M (so close to SM) to PL at BCG and not regretting it, but I can see that I won’t be “in charge” for a while and that suuuucks
I went from IBM to McK. I can honestly tell you, the world is very different here. It’s a decision I would make 100/100 times.
Those of you who are shit talking OP or the situation, you don’t know what working at IBM could be like. Being a “manager” there isn’t the same as being an EM or Project Leader for MBB. Way less control and authority.
OP, if you can make the jump, do it. It’s only 2-3 years and you’re back to being a manager again. But huge difference in learning, pay, and exit opportunities. I also love my job a lot more.
Thank you
Coming in as a lateral manager hire is a massive risk at BCG. That’s the highest fail rate in the population. You don’t know the system, you have no network, and you have no credibility among your teams. Teams don’t see lateral hire as a good thing or high performer. They see it as an “uh, oh” because you might burn through teams to try to impress someone.
You are far better off stepping back into an individual contributor role. Your pay in MBB can increase 3x in approx 4 years, but if you’re not a strong performer you’ll be riding the rail the whole way.
Depends on your goals - but generally, I’d say yes, especially if you want to fast track to industry and have some interesting exits. If your goal is consulting, it depends. Do you like the work you’re doing at your current firm? Is there a future there for you? Then a case could be made for staying.
Joining a level or two down will also REALLY help you develop an internal network and succeed in the firm’s way of doing things, which will pay off. It’s not a lack of respect for prior experience that is driving the “demotion” it’s a consideration for your future potential. Salary also increases substantially at each level so you’ll be able to make back the “lost” money (if there’s any) rather rapidly.
I’ve also found that at Bain, a manager/director elsewhere is not equivalent to a manager here in terms of responsibility and ownership, so it’s helpful to have time and space to grow into that (and if you do rock it day 1, it’ll be reflected in your bonuses). I imagine McK is similar.
MBA doesn’t matter when it comes to pay.
I think McK works something like: BA > Senior BA > EM (or fast track to EM from BA for strong performers) for undergrads or Associate > EM for MBA hires I believe. I’m not sure what Senior BAs make, prob something in the 100K-130K range? I don’t know if that’s equivalent to the Associate pay or not. Someone else will know better than me!
What are your salary expectations? If you start as a fresh BA, you'll get the standard 85k and then imo it's not worth it. You should at least push for SBA or Associate.
Signing bonus $10k, relocation $5k, base $110k, eoy bonus upto $30k (depends on ratings)
I didn't negotiate any of the numbers so not sure if other people have got slightly more.
Once you are in mck, you get pooled with the rest of BAs in terms of tenure, performance, etc.
Depends on your goals.
You could probably exit now to take management level roles (or higher; director level) in industry if you are at the M level in IBM. If that's what you want, it doesn't make any sense to reset and delay your entry by another few years just to get the MBB brand.
Even for the brand, the difference between MBB and other firms in the technology space, including IBM, is much smaller than the difference along the strategy & ops dimension. So we're good, but don't put us on a pedestal for that.
If you want to stay in consulting for a long time, MBB might be worth it. You'll come out on top of you can stay, but don't bet on it with the up or out model.
Tl;Dr when you're at the M level you're already far enough up the food chain that you have serious things to lose by resetting your career for another firm.
Thanks C1. The role at McK would be for a generalist strategy position. The problem is, I don’t think I’m quite ready for a senior level role in industry, and I want to make a move from IBM (while staying in consulting), so MBB seemed like the best bet. I just don’t know how that will impact my long term trajectory
I went from VP in BBIB to C at BCG including pay cut. Best decision ever
That’s crazy. The pay cut you took from VP to C was probably well over $250k. Unless it’s for work life balance reasons, no one should make that jump.
S&1 - definitely. Just got the invite for an interview but it’s a couple months away because of COVID. I was generally unhappy with the work at IBM and didn’t fit with my skillset so started to network and take a shot at MBB. Still want to stay in consulting and gain as must experience I can with different projects and haven’t really thought about an exit plan yet
Given additional context, it's worth pursuing the offer. Start to think about what you want now, the interview process will pull on these threads (some of the questions I asked earlier), and having a good "why" will help in two ways. First, you can decide what is in it for you and secondly, you can both confirm and convey successfully those things as you go through the process.
Do any of MBB have a precedent for 40 year-old BA’s/Associates? That sounds incredibly insulting.
Same as above applies at BCG
OP, a lot of us have shared opinions based on the general ask above. Can you shed more light? Are you close to an offer or just at the beginning stages? What motivated you to apply? What are you missing at IBM that you expect to get at an MBB? What time frame are you looking to stay in consulting i.e partner run or just step to exit? Etc
