Pros: You get to tell people you live in SF
Cons: You live in SF
Like a lot of things in this bowl, the SF criticism is highly exaggerated. Just like NYC, it’s ironic how I’ve seen much of the hate comes from people that “have visited SF a couple times” and have never lived here. The city is growing at ~8%/year despite all of its flaws (versus NYC and La growing in the low single digits slower than the pace of the rest of the US and Chicago which actually was flat).
It has its own vibe which works for some people and not others. The city is very intellectual, full of amazing outdoor opportunities, has tremendous economic opportunity (probably only behind NYC for white collar opps tbh), fair weather, is probably the 2nd best food city in the US behind NYC, has arguably the best suburban areas you’d actually want to live in the US and raise a family (with perhaps DC), and has plenty of beautiful neighborhoods really worth exploring with a strong European feel. If I hated crowds a super fast pace life and super materialistic ppl then I would hate NYC - if I hate driving and even faker people I would hate La; if I was looking for a more intellectual environment and decent weather, I would hate Chicago, etc
Now does that sound appealing to you - only you know. I love NYC for its share of reasons but my brother absolutely hates it b/c he finds it too dirty and overcrowded, prefers to have a car and have his own space, etc. Neither of us is wrong or right - it’s all about preferences and you value. It works for a lot of people and does not for many which is perfectly fine.
Two weekends a month, as in I stayed over and didn’t travel back two weekend a month. As in get there Monday, stay through the weekend and leave for home the following Thursday red-eye. As in six nights a month in the place I paid my mortgage, the rest in San Francisco. For two years.
I’d call that a pretty attentive parent.
Far less attractive women than nyc or Chicago
Unfortunately, I have to agree on this one.
Rent is exorbitant, tax is high, homeless people everywhere, street crime is high. Decent restaurants and night life, I general climate is more moderate than the east coast. Lived there many years and I would say the cons outweigh the pros
It’s not the Tenderloin where you have to be worried. It’s SOMA, from like 5th to 9th Ave.
I’ve lived in both areas.
If you like the outdoors, SF is great.
For reference, I’ve had way more aggressive encounters with homeless in nyc and DC than sf

Feel free to dm if you want! Just moved from east coast, def thing the stories I heard before moving were overblown. I’m also Asian so had been especially tense before moving
