Living in NYC vs. NJ is more of a life decision (i.e., where do you want to live when not traveling?) than an airport decision. Regarding which airport to choose - you can either choose an airport first and then your preferred airline based on that, or pick an airline and the airport will follow. JFK is more for international flights, so unless all your work travel is abroad that's probably not a good choice. EWR is a United hub and has tons of domestic and international flights on United, though it's usually an hour commute from Manhattan. LGA is a Delta and American hub and is usually a quicker commute via taxi/Uber from Manhattan (though it can vary with all the construction), but it only has domestic flights and I believe there is a distance rule so you can't fly to many parts of the western half of the country from there (it's by far the smallest NYC-area airport).
Yes. I chose to live in NJ to be closer to EWR. never really liked JFK and always had bad experience with LGA. Plus trying to avoid city tax.
I live in Queens and it's super easy to get to LGA, reasonably easy to get to JFK, and I would rather take an indirect flight than try to get to Newark.
If you're traveling for work, then you can probably expense your Ubers, and so this really doesn't matter. Going to the airport in Uber is incredibly comfortable and you could be stuck in traffic regardless of the airport depending on time of day etc.
If you have some combination of unusual circumstances like -- wanting to live in Manhattan and also needing to go to LaGuardia frequently and also a cheapskate employer who won't pay for Uber's -- The E train is pretty convenient to both LaGuardia and JFK. Live along the E train somewhere.
If you're a snob (lots of people are, it's not a slur) - you will probably find the crowd at EWR to be subpar. The passengers and overall experience of passing through LGA and JFK are more upscale. If you're taking Uber, Newark could be easier or harder depending on where you live. If you're taking public transit, Newark is much worse because their Airtrain is a terribly conceived, uncomfortable, infrequent mess.
Jfk is more of an international and C2C flight hub and LGA is more domestic.
Newark has much fewer delta options and more United.
LGA is pretty awesome for domestic flights now that it’s renovated
Also if you really want to just be super close to the airport all of the time... and still also not spend too much money on rent... I'd go for Queens near LaGuardia. It's so much more convenient if you want to enjoy New York City when you're at home. NJ has far less convenient transit options into the city and there's a stigma.
