Is the standard to NOT be able to enjoy any holidays/weekends? A senior is notoriously toxic in my group, and it seems like the expectation is just to grind around the clock. No exceptions. This can’t be normal.

Set boundaries, don’t be so hyper responsive on weekends/holidays

like

This. If you get an assignment on Friday afternoon, just say, “sounds great, I’ll get this to you Tuesday end of day”’or whatever is appropriate

likesmart

The expectation is that you will be available and work holidays and weekends as needed. Sounds like there's no need at the moment.

Same experience here but with most of my supervisors, not just one senior. I am on year 3 and don’t think I can do this much longer.

This is normal at a top shop. Better get used to living your personal life around the edges and in the seams.

Don’t follow A5’s advice. It’s utterly stupid, if your goal is to stay in BL. It’s thunderdome during associate years to fight for the chance to have a long-term role at a firm.

If you’re not responsive to your seniors, including partners, then how can the firm trust you to be responsive to clients when you’re a partner? Get out of here. BL isn’t a good fit for you.

likefunny

APC1, yes that’s indeed the case that even if you do all of that which I described, you’ll likely still not get the ring. It’s an intense competition that no associate can win by demanding WLB.

Yes. Get over it. Also it’s so weird to be making this post so close to PRESIDENT’S DAY, implying that’s the holiday you’re complaining about. I’m sure you had plans with your family. 😂

funny

Make sure to throw a hissy fit when you can’t celebrate Halloween or some other non-Holiday. Bro was getting ready to celebrate Washington’s bday and got stuck compiling docs. 😂

Unless you've given the folks you work with sufficient notice that you unfortunately will be out of pocket and unavailable X weekend, then yes - it's inevitable to have to do some work most weekends in Big Law. The reality is that associates who consistently say no to any work on the weekend or aren't as responsive are taken less seriously and eventually start falling behind their peers who are willing to help whenever asked. Only once you're more senior and established within your group can you really start setting boundaries around what hours you work.

Recently got diagnosed with a lifelong disability and it’s really made me contemplate what’s most important to me in terms of my job and how I’m ever going to “make it” in my career with a debilitating condition… or whether I even want to, for that matter. How do you handle people’s kids showing up on video meetings? Screaming, kicking, hamming it up, (wasting time.) Everyone else is coo-ing…I’m not a kids person. Heard a technique which is to drop off the call bc you “assume the call is over” (which seems like a great way to get fired especially if it’s a way higher up’s kids - plus it feels rather passive aggressive.) Thoughts?

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.
