Start a small business of some sort! I think having any sort of experience with business gives you a new understanding of design and what our clients are often dealing with. Design isn’t just about creating beautiful things, it’s about solving problems and making smart choices.
Having some sort of product or entrepreneurial pursuit shaped me as a designer and how I think for sure.

Ooh that's a good one although sounds like a heavy lift LMAO. Being a business owner definitely exposes you to a lot and makes you a more well rounded individual though that can help you in making design decisions
Service industry in a rich neighborhood
Subject Expert
Interesting. Any reason why specifically in a rich neighborhood? I've always felt that service industry related roles teach you how to deal with a variety of personalities but not immediately making the connection to what doing so in a rich neighborhood would add on besides I guess knowing a different clientele that could eventually help you out
Psychology. It matters absolutely zero if you’re the most talented designer in the world if your superior gives you direction that goes against best practices and you’re not able to influence them out of it. You need to gain trust of your senior leaders and be able to flip the script to make it seem like everything was their great idea when in reality it was yours. Thank me later.

Agree. Being able to sell your product/idea/yourself is super important in any role that you have so being able to do it well will serve you in the long run
I used to write books and poems when I was younger, and that experience has helped me a lot nowadays. I can now better convey my vision to people for a project, and I have more inspiration for little details.
Subject Expert
This is a good one! Story telling is such a big component of work so being able to do it well can really elevate any work that you're doing
nonprofit ops management

Was there something specific in that role that you did that you felt helped made you a better designer? Curious if also the nonprofit aspect played any role
Writing about ideas, design, creativity has always helped me expand my skills.
Subject Expert
These are good ones! Exploring different creative outlets can really help with tapping into the creative flow faster. Writing about things can also help with presenting and story telling which you need when communicating to clients or stakeholders
Studying marketing, and psychology.
Most of design is manipulation.
Subject Expert
LOL fair. The best designs know how to manipulate without the user feeling it so I can definitely see how marketing and psych could help amplify your skills in design
Presentation skills. Crucial when you are directing a project, starting your own practice (great presentations with smart insights gain clients) and/or stepping into leadership role.
Subject Expert
Yes - and an even bigger part of presentation is just story telling. Being able to create a narrative to convince your clients on what you're proposing is crucial
Reading the room and understanding what is truly being stated.
Subject Expert
Yea this is a big one. Reading the room not only allows you to know what's being actually discussed but also allows you to counter correctly if you need to
