Robert Nozick posed a famous thought experiment using basketball star Wilt Chamberlain to argue against wealth redistribution, asserting that freely chosen transactions (like fans paying extra to watch Wilt) create just, though unequal, outcomes, making forced redistribution unjust and akin to forced labor. The scenario challenges patterned theories of justice (like Rawls'), showing how liberty naturally upsets perfect equality, proving that a just initial state, once freely transferred, results in a just, but unequal, final state.
Have any philosophers used Wembanyama as the centerpiece of a massively influential thought experiment that has motivated decades of discussion and debate among scholars?
Not that I'm aware of... so how could he possibly claim the title of best basketball player of all time?
Nozick chose Chamberlain as his subject because, in 1974, Wilt was arguably the most culturally dominant and recognizable "superstar" athlete in the world. He was the ultimate example of someone whose "unique talents" people were voluntarily willing to pay to see, which was central to Nozick's argument against distributive justice.
Nozick wrote about Chamberlain at the peak of both his career and worldwide fame.
Which philosophers today are even aware of Wemby, much less writing influential tracts about him?
Who?
Yes
We will find out in 15 years.
He could be great but will struggle to stay healthy. The very tall skinny guys always get injured
Probably not - but maybe
